• Managing Editor at US News & World Report

  November 2011 - August 2013

  Managing editor for national news team based in Washington, DC. Edited news content, directed and oversaw all news content for www.usnews.com. Recruited and hired news team. Developed and deployed online news content products, site designs, page layouts and special projects. Increased coverage breadth and depth. Built audience and more than doubled traffic to national news site in 12 months. Worked closely with marketing and advertising in charting high ROI content products. Tracked and analyzed web metrics over a variety of analytics platforms.

  2007 - 2011

  At Military.com I recruited and managed a small team of reporters, editors and producers to build an online news operation focused on defense, the military services and national security. I gained major insight into the technical side of Web site development -- from concept, to creation, quality assurance, overall management and performance analysis. I was involved in business development, advising advertising sales operations and syndication relationships. At Military.com I represented the company at a variety of trade shows, news events, television appearances and seminars. I deployed to Iraq as Military.com's first embedded reporter in 2008 and again as an embedded reporter to Afghanistan in 2010.

During my years at ATPCO I deployed to the war zone as an embedded reporter twice to Iraq and twice to Afghanistan. For those of you who don't know me that well, I'm a journalist based in Washington, DC. I have nearly 15 years of experience covering the military, national security, defense industry and shooting sports for a variety of publications and online sites. In the last few years I've transitioned to building and managing teams of reporters and editors for national and defense news verticals. I've had a great time working on online news products and building Web audiences for news sites. And while I'm a journalist by trade, my true love is story telling. I want nothing more than to share my experiences with those who are interested in the things I'm doing, people I'm speaking to and places I'm going. I want you there too, so I try through my writing to bring you along. At the end of the day, though, I am a loving father of two wonderful kids, an adoring husband to my darling wife and a rabid shooting sportsman, outdoorsman and defense nut.
